Since its inception in 2011, the Initiatives of Media Women (IMW) has actively worked as a media-managing NGO for partner organizations and as an independent body implementing impactful projects related to gender equity and the media. Below is a summary of IMW’s key activities and accomplishments over the years:


2025: Regional Coalition Building – Visit to Bangladesh

  • Three IMW representatives visited Dhaka, Bangladesh in May 2025 to engage in a dialogue with leading Bangladeshi women journalists.
  • Organized a program titled “Promotion of Dialogue and Friendship” with the support of the Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka.
  • Visited media houses including Prothom Alo, Daily Sun, and Daily Star to explore journalists’ safety and challenges in the current political landscape.
  • Interacted with Nepali medical students in Bangladesh and observed women empowerment projects by local NGOs.
  • News stories and articles were produced based on the tour experiences.

2024: Nepal–India Women Journalists Exchange Program

  • Organized a knowledge-sharing program between Nepali and Indian women journalists in New Delhi with support from the BP Koirala India-Nepal Foundation (BPKF).
  • Aimed to foster a stronger network and mechanism for joint advocacy on gender and media issues.
  • Participants visited News 24 Broadcast Channel and Marwah Studio, gaining insights into evolving trends in Indian broadcast media.

2020: Regional Baseline Study – Women in Media

  • IMW served as a qualitative research partner for a Regional Baseline Study on Women in Media in South Asia.
  • Supported by UNESCO and South Asia Women’s Network (SWAN).

2017–2018: Regional Consultation and Training

  • Participated in a consultation and training workshop organized by the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) and the Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID).
  • The engagement refined IMW’s role in research and advocacy on gender equity in media.

2016: National Dialogue on Mental Health

  • Collaborated with the Mental Health Foundation to host a dialogue on mental health, post-conflict trauma, and the role of the state.
  • Brought together media personnel, mental health experts, and political leaders to promote policy-level inclusion of mental health.

2014: Girl Leadership and Education Project

  • Implemented a two-year project across seven districts of Far Western Nepal, supported by the Ministry of Education.
  • Focused on reducing school dropout rates among adolescent girls through leadership training and community engagement.

2013: Advocacy on Safe Motherhood

  • Coordinated a Media Strategic Workshop with the Safe Motherhood Network Federation Nepal.
  • Promoted Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) as a legal right and contributed to maternal health policy discussions.

2013: Violence Against Women (VAW) Panel

  • Hosted a major national panel with over 150 participants to address Violence Against Women.
  • Called for robust state mechanisms and stronger legal frameworks to combat gender-based violence.

2012: Political Dialogues on Gender Issues

  • Facilitated interactive forums between women journalists and political figures including Sushil Koirala, Madhav Kumar Nepal, and Pampha Bhusal.
  • Enabled women in media to question decision-makers directly on gender equity and media reforms.

2012: Gender-Friendly Budget Dialogue

  • Hosted a pre-budget dialogue with Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun, advocating for gender-responsive budgeting.
  • Played a key role in pushing for inclusive fiscal policy planning.

2012: Political Commitment Forum

  • Conducted a high-level forum featuring leaders like Prachanda, Bidhya Bhandari, and Sujata Koirala.
  • Secured public commitments toward increasing women’s political participation and representation in the Constituent Assembly.
